WHO IS GOBESS ?

When my daughter was about three years old, she used to say "Gobess, Gobess," and I had no idea what she was talking about. She said it with such enthusiasm, like it was something extraordinary! One day, while we were at the supermarket, she pointed at a strawberry and said, "Gobess!" That's when I realized she was trying to say "strawberry" in English, but her cute version of it sounded like "Gobess." I always wrote down the words she made up, and that one stuck in my mind.

My Journey to Dog Training

My story with dogs started in a rather unexpected way. In Brazil, I was a bank manager, and my wife was a dog groomer. We had solid careers, but living in Rio de Janeiro came with daily challenges, especially when it came to safety.

After the pandemic, we made the difficult decision to sell everything and start fresh in the U.S., specifically in New York City. My wife already had a profession as a dog groomer, but I wanted something new—something beyond the 13 years I spent in the banking sector.

That’s when I began working as a dog walker. To my surprise, it was life-changing: I lost weight, regained my health, and, most importantly, I found time for my family again. I realized I wanted to keep working with dogs and help people improve their relationships with their pets.

That’s when I saw an opportunity and decided to deepen my knowledge. I enrolled in the CATCH Canine Trainers Academy and began my certification. I worked in different places, but it was in a dog training company where I really honed my skills.

Eventually, I realized that there was no further growth for me in that position, so I decided to forge my own path. I started working for myself while still holding a job at the training company. After some time, I felt confident that the time had come to go fully independent, and that’s how GoBess Dog Training was born.

Years later, when I was creating my business, I thought of many names, but nothing seemed as special as this memory. And so, GoBess Dog Training was born—a name that started as my daughter’s creative attempt to say "strawberry," but for me, it’s a tribute to her and my family

My sister had lived in the U.S. for years and had always encouraged us to move here, but we were comfortable with our lives in Brazil. Then, one day, while we were driving to visit the Church of Our Lady of Penha, the GPS led us down a narrow alley in a favela. A 12-year-old boy pointed a gun at our car. My wife was holding our daughter in the front seat. It was a terrifying moment. Thankfully, he let us go, and we made it to the church safely. This experience made us rethink our future and our safety.

From Dog Walker to Dog Trainer

While working as a dog walker, I noticed many dogs had behavioral issues: some couldn’t walk with the group, others pulled on the leash, and some had separation anxiety, barking nonstop. It became clear to me that there was a gap in the market—there weren’t many affordable or accessible trainers for people who faced these challenges.

What Motivates Me Today

Today, I feel accomplished. I have the privilege of helping dogs and their owners communicate better and live in harmony. My new routine gives me time to drop off and pick up my daughter from school, support my wife, and most importantly, do something I love every day.

Being a Dog Trainer is really about being a Human Trainer—my job is to teach owners how to understand their dogs and bring out the best in them. It's incredibly rewarding to see families rediscover the joy of having a dog.

I’m grateful to God for everything I’ve experienced so far. Being able to do a job that challenges me, fills me with joy, and allows me to make a difference in people’s lives is truly a gift. It’s a profession that completes me, and I feel blessed every day to have found it.
